Hans:
Hi, I’m Hans from Munich, Germany and I come to San Diego now for more than 20 years, mainly for surfing but then I found that beautiful gym here and got in touch with Lucky. He was my first teacher and so he introduced me to boxing. Unfortunately, Lucky passed away. I met Joe, who’s the head of the boxing team here. It’s always a great spirit to work with him and to get some Mexican tricks for boxing. I enjoy that very much.
Coach Joe Vargas:
When I first came to The Arena, Hans showed up to the gym not knowing that the coach that was here before I got here, Lucky, he had passed away. He showed up and asked me for private training. Honestly, I don’t really ever do private training, not because I don’t want to, I just don’t have time. Then he started speaking to me, I realized he was from Germany and he would come all the way from Germany to come train here at The Arena. I was like, “I’ll work with you, man.” I worked with him four days and then he’s told me he’d be back the next year. I wanted to tell him no but he said, “I’ll be back next year.”
Time goes, I forgot about him. He showed up right on time again. I think it’s going on five years working out with him already. I try to wear him out, he don’t get tired. We’ll do 10, 12 rounds. I push him even more than that at a fast pace. It’s been a pleasure working with him and I look forward to him coming every year around Christmas.
The first day he got here, I was yelling at him, “Hey, calm down. Relax.”
Hans:
To The Arena, it’s now six years that I come here. Every winter, I take my winter break and come over here, mainly to go boxing and do a lot of sports here in that beautiful area.
